As a child you never think of your parent as weak or needing help. However, there are children whose parents do need help and until they get it whether it’s from a residential treatment facilities program or meetings they are no parent to any child. When you are young it’s not easy to recognize that your parent has a drinking problem or a drug problem. You just notice that they stay in bed a lot and get silly at night. As a teenager the signs of alcoholism can be more clear and even though it’s hard for a teen sometimes they need to step up to help the parent who might be in denial.

Alcoholism is something people think they know or understand because they’ve seen it played out in a TV show or a movie. If your friend or parent never really drank or had a problem with alcoholism you may be surprised when they suddenly are drinking all the time and need the help of a residential treatment programs staff. There isn’t one kind of alcoholic. Sometimes a person can go their entire life without drinking and then something happens to them like illness or depression and they start to drink.

Residential treatment is not bullet proof. An addict has to want to be sober and even when they want to be sober they can have something that happens and they fall off the wagon. Sometimes an addict goes through rehab and wears the clothes so to speak but gets out and decides that they are not an alcoholic and they can go back to drinking. Other times they didn’t go to a group meeting and use the necessary tools given when signs of relapse presented itself.

When someone in your life that has gone through the program or meetings and has committed to staying sober starts drinking again they are no honoring their sobriety. Even if they tell you they are only drinking on Saturdays or after work they have fallen off the wagon and need help.
