What is Christian Recovery?
There are obviously many different options and approaches to a recovery environment. But, it wouldn’t hurt to discuss one often overlooked option; Christian residential treatment centers. In locales such as these, the emphasis is placed on forming a very prevalent spiritual emphasis in one’s sober environment. This is totally acceptable when looking at recovery on the whole, as spirituality is a necessary requirement for any alcoholic or drug addict seeking a new way of life. Now, it obviously doesn’t have to be in the form of Christianity; but Christian rehabilitation centers offer people who already affiliate with this belief system to be comfortable with their brand of spirituality in their recovery environment. If the individual has lost their faith and the family is paying the bill, it may be the hope of the family that the addicted person find their old faith and their life back simultaneously. These actions and ideals should not be judged, as long as the person is willing to add this to their path.
In looking at the program of Alcoholics Anonymous, the most common foundation to any Christian rehab, there are great parallels between the general ideals and spiritual practices of the two schools of thoughts. So, making the connection is not an intellectually difficult task. Often, many recovered individuals make such parallels on their own, if they so choose. But, this brings up the fact that choosing Christian recovery is a choice and should never be imposed on any individual who does not support this belief system. It is simply an option available to those with a preexisting disposition. The last thing a person seeking sobriety needs is to have a belief system that is foreign to them forced onto their lap. Recovery is primarily about defining one’s personal spirituality.
