“No one wants to be in the darkness of addiction. We have often asked, 'why me, why him, why us?' But the acceptance, when it comes, is freeing. The work you do is difficult. You have to love what you do and we are thankful Bishop Gooden Home does it so well.”
– Dena and Dave D., parents, Danville, Kentucky
Family members, significant others, and co-workers often become uncomfortably aware of the growing “elephant in the living room” long before the loved is able – or willing – to address the problem. Family members are strongly encouraged to participate in family groups while their loved one is in drug and alcohol rehab at The Gooden Center. They are also invited to continue family sessions even after their loved one has discharged. The weekly three hour evening family session includes a panel of those with experience in their own recovery from co- dependency.
The next portion of the evening includes education about how roles, communication and emotions are created in the family disease of addiction. Lecture, handouts, video and exercises can all be used as teaching tools.
The final portion of the evening is the multi-family group. This is where the client and family member or loved one discusses with each other and the group a specific situation. The goal is to utilize the tools learned in the first two sections of the evening in an attempt to decrease the toxic elements and increase a healthy relationship balance.
The family Intensive Outpatient treatment session occurs every Tuesday evening. In the three-hour session family members engage with an Al-anon panel and learn how addiction has affected them and their family. Multi-family process groups explore healthy boundaries and interpersonal communication.
