Family Treatment Expansion

The Gooden Center’s first Family Day Intensive took place on July 23, 2011, generously held at St. James Episcopal Church in South Pasadena.  The day was planned and implemented by Molly D’Huet, our MFT.  From eight in the morning until four in the afternoon, adults and teens were offered workshops, with separate groups held for ages 4-6 and 7-12.

All age groups came together for meals, and time was spent in play activity as well.  It was heartwarming to see the various generations allowing themselves the joy of a simple “silly play” activity.

In the afternoon, Bud Williams, Executive Director/CEO, led his spirituality group into the chapel for a poignant interpretation of the parable of the Prodigal Son.  Application was made to the roles in families where one member acts out and potentially squanders money on behalf of his drug addiction.

The afternoon ended with a one hour family group, including the children aged four and older.  The children had created pictures based on “The worst day in my family” and “The best day in my family”.  They took turns sharing the pictures with their dads.  Other family members responded, practicing communication and boundary setting.   As Molly led the group, family members gave active feedback.  The group seemed very moved by the vulnerability of the children and by the clients themselves.

Thanks to the generosity of two foundations, the Boeing Employees Community Fund and the Hanley Foundation, we will be expanding these retreats into monthly events.
