Men and Addiction

More times than not, the treatment of addicted men is more prevalent than the amount of women in recovery. While the reasons for this have yet to be seen or known; it does explain why there is a need for residential treatment facilities that cater to needs of men only, instead of a co-ed environment. Often, it is the best interest of the male, whether he wants to accept it or not, that he be separated from the opposite sex in the beginning stages of his sobriety, as to not be tempted or brought down by another newly recovered, or actively using, female.

The science behind this is quite simple; the alcoholic or addict, in general, is sensitive to the world around him. They can easily fall victim to desires and emotions that have been suppressed by their use of substances. Therefore, when they are new to recovery, their sobriety is a whirlwind of feelings that they have not experienced for years and years. Placing this truly unstable person in an environment with women who are just as vulnerable to this sort of existence has failed more times than it has succeeded. So, it is the goal of many inpatient substance abuse treatments to create an atmosphere of success.

Now, it should be no surprise that a man will be reluctant when told that he must go into an all-male environment. He does not have a good head about him and wants more luxury than recovery at a moment’s notice. It is up to the family or significant other to see through this desire and make the best decision for him, as he is most likely incapable of making the right decision himself. Do not fret though, as the fruits of choice will come over the time of his recovery.
