Facility Facelifts
The front porch of the Bishop Gooden Home – fondly known as “The BG” by its alumni – has always been a special gathering place. Over the years however, constant use had taken its toll on the floor of the porch. Underpendings had failed, patches had broken through, and paint was worn. In July of 2011, John Farrell tore out the porch, secured the supporting beams, and crafted a beautiful new floor. With a little help from our Executive Director/CEO, Bud Williams, he stained and finished the surface. We are thrilled with the results and know that it will serve many clients for years to come.
A second much-needed job took place this summer: in 2001, the Hochman family gifted The Gooden Center with a sober living home two blocks from the Bishop Gooden Home. The Hochman House has been a striking addition to our program. Unfortunately normal weathering had resulted in grave need for repainting. In August, the house was carefully repaired and repainted with colors to match our flagship house, the “BG.”
Thanks to two very generous grants from the Pasadena Community Foundation and the Gesner/Johnson Foundation, we were able to make these much needed improvements!
