A Brief Look: Alcohol Treatment
It is very common for drugs and alcohol to be lumped into the same category when it comes to recovery and sobriety. This is entirely acceptable and the two should not be treated as mutually exclusive illnesses. But, it wouldn’t hurt to dive into some brief specifics regarding alcohol treatment.
To begin, alcohol withdrawal is one of the most serious withdrawal processes along with heroin treatment and requires a proper and careful medical detox. Without it, it is entirely possible that a person could fall victim to death or permanent physical damage. This is a harsh reality, but it is good to know what one is dealing with when seeking treatment for the alcoholic. This detox process involves close monitoring of the patient, as well as the regulation and distribution of the medication necessary to keep the alcoholic afloat. It is usually a weeklong event.
In addition, the alcoholic should never simply be set free after a medical detox, as they truly need an aftercare program. In some cases, the alcoholic may suffer from a “wet brain”, in which their cognitive abilities are truly at a deficit and they honestly know no better action than to drink again. Even a strong medical detox after a near-death experience is sometimes not enough to quell the desire of an alcoholic who has lost his ability to drink.
However, there is hope. Many alcoholics do want a medical detox because they can come to see the crippling effect alcohol has over them. They begin to look forward to treatment and the life ahead, seeking to make changes. The overall hope and outcome of successful alcohol treatment is a new man or woman who values their life and never hopes to be withdrawing on a hospital bed ever again.
